nThe surface of the earth is
divided into seven pressure belts based on the similarities and variations in
the atmospheric pressure. They are known as Global pressure belts.
Equatorial Low- Pressure Belt
nPlaces near the equator experience
more heat because the sun’s rays fall vertically on them throughout the year.
Hence, the air gets heated and it expands and rises towards the upper layers.
Moisture content of the atmosphere will be high as the region are located near
the cost. Due to these reasons the pressure in the equatorial regions is low.
These regions are known as the Equatorial Low-Pressure Belt
Sub- Tropical High Pressure Belts
nAfter reaching considerable
heights the air that ascends from the equatorial low-pressure belts, cools and
flows in the direction of the poles. This cool and dense air descends around
the sub- tropical areas (around 30onorth and 30o south). The cold air masses from
Polar regions may also reach these regions, because of the effect of the
rotation of the earth.
Sub Polar Low- Pressure Belts
nLow-pressure belts formed around
60o north and south latitudinal
regions are sub Polar Low Pressure Belts. In the sub polar regions, where the
effects of Carioles Force is move, the air is thrown our. It rises and later
subsides in the sub tropical high –pressure belts .This results in the formation
of Sub Polar Low Pressure Belts
Corioles Effect
nDue to the rotation of the earth,
any object moving on its own on the surface of the earth is deflected towards
the right in the northern hemispheres and towards the left in the Southern
hemisphere. The coriolis Effect is that which causes this
change in direction.
Polar High –Pressure Belts
nThe air in the Polar regions is
cold and dense. It also locks moisture. Therefore, the air pressure is more in
these regions. This results is the formations of polar High Pressure Belts.
